- Jigsaws work best with thinner materials since the blades can bend cutting through thicker materials, especially cutting curves. With thick materials the saw gets too hot, can overheat and the thin blade may wander causing un-square cuts. About 1 1/2 in material thickness is the limit for these saws. Jigsaw blades cut by pulling up. That means if you are cutting a material that has a finished side, say plastic laminate or paneling, you want to front side to be facing down.
